Disney DUMBO Animation Model Sheet DUMBO + TIMOTHY, 1941

WALT DISNEY STUDIO
Dumbo (1941)
original production animation model sheet
photostatic print on paper, dimensions:11 " x 14"
Since the early 1930s the Disney Studio has produced model sheets of its animated characters and/or atmosphere and concept art for circulation among artists and animators working in production of an animated film. Before the 1970s they were reproduced by a photostatic or printing process. They were made when a character or setting was in development and to help animators maintain a consistent look to the character throughout the film. This photostat model sheet titled "Dumbo Suggestion Sketches" was made at the Disney Studio during production of Dumbo, and it was issued to animators "3-4-40" for use in developing the look of Dumbo and Timothy. The drawings reproduced are by Albert Hurter, Walt Disney's great inspirational artist of the period, and his initials appear as part of the Character Model Dep't. stamp at upper left. Note that in these early sketches Timothy looks more like Mickey Mouse than he does in the final version seen in the film. The model sheet was mounted by the Disney artist who received it to an 11.25" x 14.25" board with a commonly-used transfer adhesive that has not caused any discoloration it at all. Our certificate of authenticity is included.
