Since the early 1930s the Disney Studio has produced model sheets of its animated characters and/or atmosphere and concept art for circulation among artists and animators working in production of an animated film. Before the 1970s they were reproduced by a photostatic or printing process. They were made when a character or setting was in development and to help animators maintain a consistent look to the character throughout the film. This photostat model sheet titled "Suggestions for 'The Reluctant Dragon'" was made at the Disney Studio during production of The Reluctant Dragon, and it was issued on "6-13-40" to further development of characters and situations in the animated film. All of the drawings shown are by Albert Hurter, Walt Disney's brilliant inspirational artist of the 1930s and early-1940s, and "AH" is reproduced in the studio's "Character Model Dep't" stamp at upper right. As in most cases, the filmed version of the characters is very different from Hurter's designs. However, that did not lessen his contribution. His work was valued by Walt Disney because his fertile imagination and quick pencil produced sketches of actors, situations, even inanimate objects that could jumpstart the thinking of other artists and drive story and character development

This is the final model of Pinoke, and the studio's dated "Character Model Dep't." stamp is reproduced in the model sheet at upper left.

This photostat model sheet titled "Dumbo Suggestion Sketches" was made at the Disney Studio during production of Dumbo, and it was issued to animators "3-4-40" for use in developing the look of Dumbo and Timothy. The drawings reproduced are by Albert Hurter, Walt Disney's great inspirational artist of the period, and his initials appear as part of the Character Model Dep't. stamp at upper left. Note that in these early sketches Timothy looks more like Mickey Mouse than he does in the final version seen in the film. The model sheet was mounted by the Disney artist who received it to an 11.25" x 14.25" board with a commonly-used transfer adhesive that has not caused any discoloration it at all. Our certificate of authenticity is included.

Between 1958 and 1961 Larry Harmon produced 156 cartoons featuring Bozo and his pal Butchy Boy to air on the live-action show that he syndicated to local television stations throughout the USA. This original final animation drawing of Bozo was created by a studio animator in production of the opening of the animated cartoons, and a cel painting was made directly from it. The animator wrote the studio designation “Use for Held Pos. 2” along the bottom to indicate this original's place in the scene and/or film. The model sheet depicts nine typical poses of Bozo that was made for use of the animators of their work on the cartoons.
